About

Liz Hartley, printmaker in her studioI fell in love with printmaking after attending a weekend linocut course. Two days and I was hooked. I’ve always loved colour, nature and drawing but these took a back seat whilst I was raising a family and working. After many short courses I quit my day job, took the plunge and did a year-long course at the Curwen Print Study Centre, a traditional fine art printmaking charity associated with Stanley Jones MBE. I was awarded a Certificate in Fine Art Printmaking in 2022 and set up my studio in Wendens Ambo shortly afterwards.

I grew up in the Fens on a farm. At the time I couldn’t wait to get away but now I’m constantly exploring ways to capture the austere beauty of that watery, flat landscape. My prints often have the wide-open skies typical of East Anglia, or the watery reflections of its many dykes and rivers. Trees and their infinite variety of shapes are also an endless fascination.

Recently I was artist in residence at the Crinan Hotel, Argyll on the West Coast of Scotland and was totally captivated by the mountains, distant islands and remnants of ancient Caledonian rainforest.

I exhibit my work nationally and locally, showing at occasional art fairs in East Anglia as well as at Church Street Gallery, Saffron Walden. I’m a member of Cambridge Drawing Society so exhibit new work at their Spring and Autumn exhibitions.

My print, Spring Rooks, was awarded a prize for Best 2 D work at the Uttlesford Open exhibition My prints have also been selected for juried exhibitions at the International Original Print Fair at Bankside Gallery and the Royal Society of Marine Artists at the Mall Galleries, London.

My work

My prints are usually made using multiple blocks of lino. Each block carries a separate layer of ink and the image is built up of multiple layers, each printed separately. More recently I have been experimenting with reduction printing, using a single piece of lino to produce a many coloured print. The lino is cut away as each layer is printed and the image gradually emerges. The key difference is there’s no going back, as the block is essentially destroyed in the process. The whole process can take many weeks.

Whatever the method all my prints are handprinted on the press in the studio. My more complex prints will have been through the press up to fifteen times, building up multiple layers of ink to create detailed images with a strong sense of perspective and light. I print using oil-based inks, mixing my own colours from a standard set of 8 colours. Mostly I use very translucent ink so the colour underneath will influence the colour above, sometimes in unpredictable ways which is part of the fun of printmaking.
